Scientists are employing a nasal spray of oxytocin hormone for treating women ailing from interstitial cystitis, or continual bladder wall inflammation. In few women, cystitis is a rare occurrence while in others it is known to occur 4-5 times annually. It is commonly observed among women that are sexually active, in pregnant women and subsequent to menopause.

Patients could have the condition lasting for protracted periods of time, when abruptly it is observed to subside – only to relapse days or months later.

The condition seems to deteriorate among women during the onset of their menstrual cycle and could be aggravated due to underlying stress.

Treatments offered are aimed at curbing the symptoms that could comprise of pain experienced in the abdomen, bladder and pelvic area, blood emitted in urine, urine appearing cloudy or having a foul smell, pain during intercourse, pain radiating directly above the pubic bone and recurrent urination – at times occurring nearly sixty times during a single day. Elderly women might show no symptoms except for weakness, felling befuddled, fever or falls.
