Drug That Puts A Final Stop On Menstrual Pain

Amongst countless women, menstrual pains are an unavoidable feature of their daily existence.

However, now women do not need to valiantly face up to the excruciating pains anymore, as researchers have unravelled a wonder pill that would finally put a halt on period discomfort and pain.

The drug’s USP is that it is intended to deal with the cause of stomach cramps that tends to incapacitate many women, instead of merely treating the symptoms.

The brainchild behind this advancement, Dr. Jim Philips, from Vantia Therapeutics, Southampton states that Dysmenorrhoea or painful periods is known to have a major bearing on scores of women and there is dearth of any form of targeted treatment for treating this misery. Dr. Phillips further added that this is a major breakthrough as there is no other available treatment to match this. He said that it could offer an effectual substitute to over-the-counter pain relievers.

The drug for the time being known as VA111913, has already been deemed safe with minimal side effects. The drug would be tentatively obtainable in the next four years depending on the success rate of the secondary trials.

The drug trial would be conducted on 128 women lying in the age bracket of 18-35 years in Britain and the United States. Candidates that ailed from debilitating period pains hindering day-to-day functioning would be administered dosages of the drug for at most 6 days for the duration of their menstrual cycle. The drug functions by normalising vasopressin levels – a hormone responsible for controlling the contraction of the muscles in the uterine wall.

Relief for menstrual painMr. Hilary McElwaine-John, the CMO or chief medical officer of the company stated that the locally available drugs failed to measure up to the requirements of those set of women that are incapable of even going to work or school due to the discomfort and pain.

Statistics have revealed that menstrual pain is known to ail eighty percent of women in some phase of their lifetime. Women have tried everything from relaxation exercises or warm compresses on the stomach in an attempt to fight the pain. The commonly used over-the-counter medicines are ibuprofen and naproxen being the sole treatment options for those women suffering from period pains.

With an overwhelming requirement for means of easing the pain, the curative market for treating period pains is approximated at surpassing six hundred millions globally. Menstrual pains occur due to uterine contractions during periods. Each type of contraction hinders the flow of blood that starves oxygen supply to the tissues. Concurrently, there is a release of the chemicals known as prostaglandins that elicit forceful contractions that raises the intensity of the pains.

The outcome of the trial that would last over a span of the subsequent 2 months would become known by the middle part of the forthcoming year.
